Course Description

This class presents current research findings on librarians' roles supporting the disaster workforce. The class also discusses the information needs of first responders, emergency managers, and other professionals working in the areas of disaster planning, response, and recovery. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on class content through tabletop exercises that simulate disaster scenarios and interactive activities. Participants will also gain knowledge of a range of potential information services they could offer members of the disaster workforce.

Educational objective

After attending this course, students will be able to:

  • Define a disaster and distinguish disasters from hazards
  • Classify disasters into two distinct types
  • Name three stages in the disaster management cycle
  • Identify members of the disaster workforce
  • Articulate how librarians historically viewed their roles in disasters
  • Recognize roles librarians have played in disasters
  • Identify professional roles for librarians during all stages of the disaster management cycle
  • Present your skills to members of the disaster workforce

Agenda

9:00am - 9:30am -- Coffee, snacks, and registration

9:30am - 12:30pm -- CE course

12:30pm - 1:30pm -- Lunch and business meeting

1:30pm - 3:00pm -- Panel Discussion, Moderated Q & A

3:00pm - 3:15pm -- Wrap-up, Evaluation

A light breakfast and lunch will be included. Vegetarian options will be available.
